Passing through the winding and steep passes of Thung Khe and Thung Nhuoi, you will admire the overlapping beauty of mountains and vegetation on your way to Mai Châu, Hoa Binh. About 140 km from Hanoi city center, Mai Châu captivates tourists with its “fragrant sticky rice seasons” gradually appearing under the new sunshine and peaceful scenery.

Transportation Options

You can use several transportation methods to reach Mai Châu:

• 🏍️ Motorbike/Car: Experience the feeling of freedom, beautiful and easy roads
• 🚌 Bus: From Yen Nghia or My Dinh bus stations, ticket price approximately 80,000 - 140,000 VND/person
• 🚐 Tourist vehicle: Premium service, price approximately 150,000 - 250,000 VND/person

Travel Directions

You can choose one of these two routes:

Route 1 (140 km) by motorbike: Nguyen Trai - Quang Trung - Ba La - Chuc Son - Xuan Mai, Luong Son - Ky Son, Hoa Binh - Cao Phong, Tan Lac - Thung Khe Pass - Mai Châu.

Route 2 (150 km) by car: Thang Long Avenue (Trung Hoa underground tunnel) - Xuan Mai - Luong Son - Ky Son, Hoa Binh - Cao Phong, Tan Lac - Thung Khe Pass - Mai Châu.

Important Notes:

• 🛣️ Roads: Beautiful and easy to navigate as they’re not too winding or dangerous

🎯 Things to Do

🌄 Thung Khe Pass

The first attraction is Thung Khe Pass or Da Trang Pass, located on National Route 6, between Tan Lac and Mai Châu districts. This was originally limestone mountains, formed during road construction. This is also a place with frequent cloud coverage, creating a misty landscape. There are also stalls selling local specialties, food, and drinks for resting tourists.

🏘️ Ban Lac

To learn about local culture, you shouldn’t miss Ban Lac, where there are hundreds of stilt houses up to 700 years old. This place also has endless rice fields and stilt house homestays for accommodation.

🛍️ Ban Pom Coong

If you enjoy shopping, you can also visit Ban Pom Coong to find beautiful handmade crafts.

🏞️ Tòng Đậu, Cha Long

To experience the non-commercial lifestyle, you should visit Tòng Đậu, Cha Long to relax and feel the authentic rural life as locals mainly work in agriculture.

🕳️ Mo Luong Cave

Mo Luong Cave is located in the Pu Kha mountain range in Mai Châu town. The cave has 4 main chambers, famous for its stalactites forming various shapes like flowers and streams. During the resistance against France, this place served as a command base for our military and people. After completing the journey, tourists can admire an underground stream flowing to a nearby lake at the last chamber.

☁️ Hang Kia - Pà Cò

Hang Kia - Pà Cò is located at the gateway to Northwest Vietnam at an altitude of 1,200 - 1,500 m above sea level, with year-round cloud coverage. These are the only two Mong villages in Hoa Binh, surrounded by rocky mountains. By hiking to the sky gate area, you can immerse yourself in the white, floating sea of clouds. From November to April is the ideal time for cloud hunting at Hang Kia - Pà Cò.

Clouds are usually abundant and beautiful between 5 AM - 9 AM. If you’re not lucky with the sea of clouds, this is still a wonderful scenic spot to overlook the entire valley. Local people also plant many flowers in this area for tourists to take photos with wooden bridges.

🛒 Pà Cò Market

Pà Cò Market is also a unique destination you should try. Pà Cò Market is held every Sunday weekend. The Mai Châu market session runs from 5 AM to 9 AM. The market sells local products, textiles, etc. of H’Mong, Thai, and Muong people…

🌊 Go Lao Waterfall (Go Mu Waterfall)

Go Lao Waterfall or Go Mu Waterfall is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Mai Châu, located in Phuc San commune, about 15 km from Mai Châu. From the Tòng Đậu crossroads towards Moc Chau, you can easily find the path down to the waterfall. You can park at a local house right before the waterfall and hike down. The waterfall is about 20 m high, with white cascading water and large rocks in the lake.

🌊 Hoa Binh Lake

When visiting Mai Châu in a large group, you shouldn’t miss visiting Hoa Binh Lake to Ngòi Hoa Bay, Ao Tien, and Den Ba Chu Thac Bo. The boat dock is at the end of Suoi Lon village.

🌸 Thai Flower Garden

If you enjoy taking check-in photos, Thai Flower Garden is an ideal stop with many types of mustard flowers, buckwheat, and butterfly wings.

🎭 Local Culture

Additionally, don’t forget to explore local culture and learn about the unique aspects of Thai, Dao, and H’Mong ethnic groups’ lives. During your stay, you’ll encounter images of elderly women spinning yarn, weaving textiles, or men diligently carving arrows and knife handles.
